fire season is off to an early start from southern california to here in wine country warm windy weather ratcheting up the fire danger tonight. i'm dan ashley. we want to take you to a fire developing in lake county. this fire with we he can show you burning right now near

kelseyville. live pictures from sky 7 hd. at least one structure burned and others threatened by the fire. there are no no injuries. in napa, 20 acres burning there. a large trailer deis troyed. cal fire says full containment should be reached by the morning. they will go at it all night. firefighters getting the upper hand on what is called the yellow fire. it burned through a couple hundred acres in sonoma county just across the county line from calistoga. a pair of strike teams from ail alameda county have been dispatched to the yellow fire to help out. wayne freedman has been on the scene all day. >> the winds were horrific. i swear i thought our roof was going to come off because it was so bad. >> reporter: instead trees fell often on power lines sparking a flurry of relatively small but

destructive blazes, the largest the yellow fire. burned vineyards owned by kendal jackson. a couple of miles up highway 28? >> devastation. >> this is what remains of a historic home built from old redwood. the home in which nick has lived with his wife for 20 years. a lifetime of memories and collectibles turned to ash. as it stands this could have been much worse. the fire department arrived just in time. >> it was horrifying for my wife and i for those minutes that we were down there alone and i knew people were coming but until they do those minutes are like hours. >> reporter: the silver lining in the story nick and hits wife will go back to the the house. the owners plan to build it. wayne freedman, abc 7 news. a red flag fire warning extended until noon tomorrow. winds dying down but you temperatures dangerously high.

joaquim miller park forced to close today because of the tire threat. torn now to weather anchor spencer christian for the fire weather outlook, spencer. >> we still have high concern for fire danger here in the bay area. clear skies. low humidity. warm weather. and we still have the winds even though they are diminishing. the red flag warning remains in effect until noon tomorrow for elevations above a thousand feet. the north bay mountains, east bay hills and diablo range and elevations lower than that. humidity generally around 10% to 20% which is low and winds still gusting 30 to 45 miles per hour in the higher elevations although nothing like the potentially damaging winds we saw last night. at this hour looking at winds gusting to 30 miles per hour in knoxville creek. calm in some other locations. 33 miles per hour at mount diablo. 25-mile per hour gusts at calaveras road. relative humidity readings at the moment. still dry for most of the bay area. fairfield at 17%. and over at livermore 20%.

but a little higher near the coast. notice 82% relative humidity at half moon bay. conditions are beginning to improve just a bit in some spots but mainly near the coast we still have concern, great concern about fire danger as temperatures will be rising tomorrow to near record levels and i will give you a look at that in just a few minutes. dan? spencer, thank you. the biggest fire burning tonight is near banning in riverside fire. right now it has burned about 1700 acres. destroyedne home destroyed there. some homes evacuated. fire is now 30% contained. no word how to started but it will continue to burn for some time. a different kind of fire to be put out. this one by cal trans. word of even more construction issues tonight on the bay bridge. nearly two dozen welds could be cracked and must be repaired before the bridge can open. the flaws affect welds as long as 33 feet that connect steel plates at the base of the tower. this new issue comes just as cal trans is still trying to figure out a fix for dozens of

facebook's headquarters and the vice chair of san francisco's republican party says conservatives are a little skeptical of the facebook founder's new message. >> i see conservatives who are weary of the silicon valley companies because they have been known for more of their progressive points of view. >> facebook declined our request for a comment today and our requests to mark zuckerberg and to the organizations that he is bankrolling also went unanswered. in the newsroom, mark matthews, abc 7 news. california is getting 24 million today's implement its own version of gun control. the bill signed today by the governor will let the attorney general hire 36 special agents. those agents will be in charge of confiscating weapons from 20,000 californians not allowed heelly to own a gun. the state already checks databases of gun buyers with those prohibited from owning firearms because of a criminal record or mental illness. the white house is look at california's gun tracking system in hopes of duplicating

it across the country. in sacramento, there is a move to tax oil for education. those behind it say big aisle has been getting a sweet heart deal in th the golden state, paying no tax on the oil they take out of the ground here. >> reporter: california is the only top ten oil producing state in the country that does to ensure impose a tax on companies for the oil they extract within its boundaries. senate committee aims to change that approving a 9.5% extraction tax mostly to fund education. part of the $2 billion a year would also go toward k-12 classrooms and state parks. college students say they need relief from the skyrocketing tuition hikes. >> the cost is increasing so fast i'm working two jobs. i work 40 hours a week. >> critics believe the oil companies will just pass on the tax to consumers by raising gas prices something that the author says is not true.

>> oil prices are set in a global market and that is not just my opinion. >> there is potentially 15 billion-barrels of oil under the monterey shale that runs between northern and southern california that can be recovered through a controversial method called fracking. the extraction tax would bring in another $2.5 million a year if fracking in the area is aloud. current leaders are especially worried about the tax fearing oil companies wouldn't want to proceed with the new you cost. >> it will place much of this critical natural resource beyond recovery and out o of the reach of california's consumers. >> the evans proposal also makes small businesses very nervous. rob envirovac says chevron and others will eliminate the need for its services. >> that could close my doors. i have 44 employees. >> at least a dozen versions of an oil extraction tax have failed since 1994.

on this first day of may, thousands of people attended may daypro tests in the bay area today. the biggest crowd was in san jose. you can see from sky 7 hd people stretched for blocks and

blocks. the crowd consisted of workers labor groups civil rights organizations and religious groups focused on raising their voices that lawmakers in washington need to agree on immigrant rights reform and providing a path for citizen high pressure. also pictures of a march in san francisco where immigration rights was also the focus of this may day rally. this started at mission and 24th and ended up at civic center plaza. in oakland across the bay, hundreds of immigrant workers and community members gathered at fruitveal plaza. the demonstration was designed as the need to expand rights for all a immigrants. that was the theme around the bay area at mayday demonstrations and in fact around the country. health news tonight. a wakeup call for any one who takes ambien or the generic version of that sleeping bill. as lisa stark explains a new report shows a huge jump in emergency room visits and most of them are women.

>> reporter: a growing number of those popping the sleeping pill ambien or its generic version are ending up in the emergency room. pair now that or confusion sent more than 10,000 people to the e.r. in 201. and two thirds of them were women. >> why more women than men? >> i think we know that women clear the drug from their system more slowly than men and in fact the fda recommendd that we use a lower dos for women. >> this sleeping pill has often been in the news with a dangerous side effect. >> you hit something with your car. >> sleep driving. i tried a driving simulator on ambien and found out how you scary this is. 30 minutes after taking the drug. >> am i on the right-side of the road? >> 90 minutes after i smash into a big rig. at four hour i think i'm okay but see this red light, i run

as we expect record highs in numerous locations. cooling area wide begins on friday and we will see a sharp drop in temperatures as we move into next week. satellite image shows a center of high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south. a sharp pressure difference overnight last night which produced strong gusty winds. we have an opposing wind pattern. a flow of northerly winds producing sort of an offshore warming effect but we also i he a sea breeze right now you opposing the off shore flow producing cooling ail long the coastline but probably not enough to bring temperatures down in the inland locations tomorrow. overnight tonight quite mild just about everywhere except on the coast. lows generally in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. tomorrow's highs quite high, indeed, in the south bay look for high temperatures in the low 90s. 92 at san jose. if that occurs it will be a record high for that date tomorrow. on the peninsula, look for highs in the low 90s in many

locations including mountain view which could set a record high for tomorrow's date. mid 70s on the coast which is very mild for coastal readings around this time of the year. downtown san francisco a predicted high of 86 degrees which would be a record high for that date in san francisco. in the north bay look for highs in the low 90s and several locations that could is set records tomorrow. santa rosa, san rafael and napa among those. on the east bay low 90s also. oakland and richmond will probably be in record high territory. and in the inland east bay highs in the mid 90s and if livermore reaches 96 that will be a record for livermore for tomorrow's date. the accuweather seven-day forecast. tomorrow it will be the hottest day in the forecast period. warm inland on friday and saturday. temperatures moderating a bit and then a sharp dropoff in temperatures on sunday, monday, tuesday and wednesday and even a slight chance of showers on monday and tuesday so after this dangerously hot pattern we are in right now, temperatures well below the average for several days.

we believe in. your energy plus ours. together, there's no limit to what we can achieve. three men accused of helping boston bombing suspect dhokhar tsarnaev appeared in court today. they are not -- they are charged with lying to federal agents and obstruction of justice as well. the story from abc news reporter brian ross. >> reporter: the fbi has been suspicious of the friends since the day of the man shunt when s.w.a.t. teams raided the college campus and two were taken into custty on immigration charges. the two from kazakhstan haded traveled with dhokhar tsarnaev to new york last year proudly posing in this snap shot. the third person charged today a u.s. citizen had been a friend since high school.

tonight, the fbi says dhokhar's friends recognized him immediate play when the surveillance photos of the suspects were made public. >> we consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous. >> reporter: and decided to help him by getting rid of potential evidence. a lawyer for one of the teens denied that after a court hearing today. >> immediately we dispute and wele be looking forward to proving our case in court. >> reporter: but the fbi says one of the teens tested dhokhar and asked if he was the bomber. lol, laugh out loud, dhokhar responded and then another exchange. come to my room and take whatever you want. the fbi says the three went to dhokhar's dormitory that night down this hall to h his third floor room number 7341. according to the complaint, they took a backpack containing fireworks with the powder removed and dhokhar's laptop computer. that night, there was the violent confrontation with authorities in watertown and the man shunt for dhokhar

began. it was then the fbi says that one of the friends went behind their apartment in new bedford and dumped the backpack and fireworks in this dumpster. the dumpster's contents ended up at a land fill where the fbi searched for three days and found what it says were these fireworks that the fbi now alleges the friends tried to hide. brian ross, abc news, new york. we have news tonight about the attack in benghazi libya. the fbi posted photos of these three men saying they were there on the night of the attack. the fbi is asking for information about who the men are. they are not identified. the attack left three he other americans dead in addition to the ambassador. two planes clipped wings tonight on the tarmac at newark international airport. a united airlines plane clipped

a scandinavian plane. no one was hurt but the mishap is causing travel delays for passengers. we often report on bone marrow drives around the bay area. today we wanted to bring you a success story from ucsf. a rare meeting between a leukemia survivor and her donor. >> reporter: 13-year-old vikki trann is celebrating her first birthday. one year ago today she received a bone marrow he transplant and on this anniversary the leukemia surviver is meeting and thanking her donor are. >> he saved my -- saved my life and if she hadn't i would still be in the hospital. >> reporter: it is rare enough asiand a donor for acian americans. each ethnicity that's their own dna matches. the perfect match for vicky was

some good news heading into the summer travel season. bay area gas prices are lower at this time than they were this time last year. the triple-a daily fuel beige shows we are averaging $3.92 in san jose. $3.93 in oakland and $4.03 in san francisco. the highest average in the state, by the way. what if there were a cheaper alternative that could be pro deuce on the scale of oil and be better for the environment

at the same time? >> that is what they are working on at the joint bioenergy institute in emeryville. >> every day, hundreds of thousands of cars crowd bay area treats and highways. for every gallon of gas burned nearly 20-pounds of carbon gas is released into the environment. >> our job here is not to produce fuels but develop the science and then companies will then license and turn into fuel. >> the joint bioenergy indiana student in emeryville is made up you of six partner institutions led by the lawrence berkeley lab. we first told you about the lab shortly after it opened in 2008 injure. it was funded by a five year $134 million grant. >> we are are closer to see the biofuels come to the marketplace. >> blake simmons has been here since the beginning. he says scientists have found

good alternatives to fossil fuels including ways to maximize the amount of fuel they can get from plants. >> and we developed techniques and patented them on how you to do that. >> the lab found ways to break down green waste into the sugar that will ultimately become fuel. >> tear apart the plants and extract the sugars more readily and microbes that will synthesize fuels that can be drop inside gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. >> how do they make it on the scale of large refrainries and make it affordable. >> that is the one critical bottleneck that we are trying to address. >> one floor below the lab, scientists are hoping to find answers. this is the advanced biofuels process demonstration unit. a miniature version of a massive refinery. the lab provided us with a video of the unit working. >> we do essentially the same thing that 150 years ago was done for oil. >> not only are they looking for ways to better process

biofuels they are looking closely at the byproducts as well. when all is discovered we realize there is a lot of valuable compounds in oil that we could fractionate and recover. >> the processor opened in 2011 and was funded bay $20 million grant from the department of energy. while is it perfects a method for refining biofuel scientists are still working to make a more affordable fuel. right now they can produce tank ready fuel for about the same price as a barrel of oil o. the big difference, no greenhouse gass. >> still a lot of researches to be done on making them more afford and and making plants be better bioenergy crops but we made a lot of progress. >> the government seems happy with the progress the lab gave as well. they gave it another five years and $125 million to continue the remarkable work being done. getting inked. the company taking brand marketing to literal and painful new levels. that is next on abc
